Sgt. Mitch Spike (left) and Officer Don Dougherty
Palm Springs PD "Radio Call" was first heard on January 14, 1999 on NewsTalk 920 before taking the show "on the road". Now the "Broadcasters in Blue" are back home again where it all began.
The project was the brainchild of Officer Don Dougherty as part of the Palm Springs Police Department's Community Policing effort. Officer Don Dougherty is a 22-year veteran of the Palm Springs Police Department, currently assigned to the patrol division.
Don is joined every week by Sgt. Mitch Spike. Sgt. Spike has been with PSPD for 25 years including 11 years as a supervisor. In addition to his duties as the Administrative (Personnel & Training) Sergeant, Mitch is also the police department's official spokesperson. As a licensed pilot, he coordinates and flies for the Palm Springs Police Aero Squadron.
More recently, Officer Harvey Reed joined the team. Harvey joined the Palm Springs Police Department only a few years ago, but was a police sergeant in Foster City, California before migrating south. He is currently assigned to the Palm Springs International Airport. He also has experience as a professional radio rock & roll DJ, which is why he has often engineered the show in addition to his co-hosting duties.
Each week, Don, Mitch, and Harvey host the live radio show, inviting guests
from different divisions in the Police Department, other City divisions, and
from around the community. Guests have included published authors,
political figures, and actors. The phone lines are open for residents and
visitors to ask questions or make comments about any topic.
Don, Mitch, and Harvey can also be reached by email at Radio Call. Give us
your ideas for future topics!
