When former Chief of Police Lee Weigel promised to bring community policing to Palm Springs, he envisioned a working partnership between the citizens of the community, and their police department. The true embodiment of that commitment can be found at the Downtown Experience.
Located at 105 South Indian Canyon Dr., the Downtown Experience is home to the Police Department's bicycle patrol unit, a contingent of four sworn Police Officers and two non-sworn Community Service Officers under the direction of the Police Department Watch Commander. The array of services offered at the Downtown Experience also includes Village Fest, City Landscaping and Streets, Community Preservation, Citizens On Patrol (a volunteer branch of the Police Department), and Catholic Charities, a social outreach organization.
When the Downtown Experience opened for business on January 3, 1999, its mission was to provide quality police services in the heart of Palm Springs. A strict enforcement posture was the first order of business, and while enforcement is on-going, the mission has shifted to exploring long-term solutions to the quality of life issues facing all members of the community.
The officers of the Downtown Experience have taken a non-traditional approach, inviting the civilian community to participate in solving "police" problems. These cooperative efforts have expanded beyond Downtown, and they include a Homeless Task Force, a skateboard park committee, a property beautification program, and a noise pollution committee. Leaders from the business, political, religious, and social outreach communities have joined forces with concerned citizens to reach sensible solutions to the issues.
The Downtown Experience has been the subject of several recent media reports chronicling its unique approach to community issues. The officers of the Downtown Experience will continue to assure the safety of the citizens of Palm Springs, while they remain dedicated to community involvement.
